Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, one of the sons of former Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi, was killed after being shot in the city of Zintan, located in the west of the country. The information was released this Tuesday (3), by the state network Al Arabiya, in Saudi Arabia, and later confirmed by people close to the politician.
The circumstances of the death are still being investigated, with conflicting statements about what actually happened. Gaddafi’s son’s team told the AFP news agency that four men broke into the 53-year-old politician’s home. His sister, on the other hand, told Libyan TV that he died on the border with Algeria. Investigations continue to identify the suspects. The politician was tipped to be his father’s successor before the regime fell in 2011.
Saif was arrested by militias after the end of the civil war in Libya and the death of his father in 2011. He was sentenced to death in 2015, but was eventually freed by rebels two years later.
