A 65-year-old woman drove about 60 km in a car identical to hers, without noticing that she had accidentally taken someone else’s vehicle.

The incident took place in Mafra, in the north of Santa Catarina state, Brazil. According to a report from g1 the mix-up happened when the older woman left a restaurant and got into a white one Jeep Compass which was parked at the establishment.

However, it turned out that the car she took belonged to someone else. Alessandro Lemos de Souzathe owner of the vehicle taken, told g1 that the woman only discovered the mistake in São Bento do Sul, 60 km from Mafra, when the police contacted her.

About two hours later the vehicle was returned. According to the Military Police of Santa Catarina, suspicion of theft was ruled out because the owner had left the key in the car. The case was therefore treated as a simple mistake.

“When she left the restaurant, she pressed her key to open her car. But in this case, mine was already open. She thought she had unlocked hers and got into mine. And her car stayed open, because she had unlocked it,” Alessandro told g1.

After leaving in the wrong car, her own vehicle was left unlocked and parked at the restaurant. “We opened it to see if there was a phone number or something like that. There was a bag of documents and some storage boxes in the car. I don’t know how she didn’t notice that.”

According to Alessandro, the woman even noticed during her drive that some of her personal items were missing from the car and she was already on her way to the police station to report what she thought was a theft.

“She was on her way to the police station thinking things had been stolen from her car. It was a very strange, even funny situation, because she noticed things were missing and wanted to report it stolen from her car while she was driving mine,” he said.
