The Mexican government announced this Wednesday (11) that it will send a second shipment of humanitarian aid to Cuba and stated that it will continue with shipments until around 800 tons are completed.
Last weekend, the administration of leftist president Claudia Sheinbaum had already sent a shipment that mainly contained food and inputs.
“They arrive tomorrow, the ship returns. And a second shipment will be made and we will continue shipping like this. Until we reach 800 tons”, reported Sheinbaum today, who also spoke of the possibility of donations from Mexican civil society organizations.
“We will provide a contact so that these groups can have some link with the government, in case there is space in what is being sent so that more can be sent”, said the president, who did not detail the content of the second shipment.
The delivery of humanitarian aid is part of cooperation programs with Cuba that Mexico has maintained in recent years.
Sheinbaum has reiterated humanitarian aid to the island since, at the end of January, United States President Donald Trump announced the application of tariffs on products imported from countries that send oil to Cuba.
Mexico, which was the island’s biggest oil exporter in 2025, has halted those shipments, but Sheinbaum said diplomatic negotiations are underway to resume those deliveries and has criticized the Trump administration for enforcing the surcharge.
“No one can ignore the situation that the people of Cuba are experiencing right now due to the sanctions that are being imposed very unfairly by the USA on any country that sends them oil,” declared the president on Monday (9).
