Mexican drug trafficker Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho”, was killed in a military operation, a government source familiar with the operation told Reuters on Sunday. Oseguera, a former police officer, was the shadow leader of the powerful Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), a group named after the state of the same name, home to Mexico’s second largest city, Guadalajara. In a relatively short period of time, the CJNG has transformed into a criminal enterprise that spans the entire continent and rivals its former allies in Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s Sinaloa Cartel, now in a North American prison. The news came to light after an operation by federal forces that led to vehicle fires and roadblocks in the state of Jalisco, in western Mexico, according to Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro. He said that an operation in the city of Tepalpa provoked clashes in that region and in other areas of Jalisco, where unknown people burned vehicles and crossed them on the roads to prevent the authorities from taking action.
