Mendonça requests a meeting with PF delegates about the Master case

by Marcelo Moreira

Minister André Mendonça, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), called for this Friday (13) a meeting with the delegates responsible for the investigation investigating Banco Master. Chosen as the new rapporteur for the case on Thursday (12), he intends to learn about the details of the investigations, which point to an estimated loss of more than R$40 billion.

The change in rapporteurship occurred after Minister Dias Toffoli left the process. The decision was taken after the Federal Police (PF) found messages on the cell phone of banker Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, in which Toffoli’s name was mentioned. Faced with the repercussions, the magistrate requested his removal from the case.

Despite this, the other ministers of the Court expressed support for Toffoli through an official note. They stated that there were no grounds for declaring their suspicion and considered all the acts he carried out while he was in charge of the investigation to be valid. In a meeting held on Thursday (12), the board concluded that it was not appropriate to remove him due to suspicion, but, even so, Toffoli chose to give up his role as rapporteur.

Among the first decisions that will be made by Mendonça is the definition of the competent forum for the progress of the process, whether it will remain in the STF or whether it will be sent to the first instance. The case reached the Supreme Court due to the summons of authorities with privileged jurisdiction, such as federal deputy João Carlos Bacelar (PL-BA).

Master Case

Named Operation Compliance Zero, the investigation investigates suspicions of fraudulent management, criminal organization and issuance of fictitious credits. In addition to Vorcaro, the banker’s family and former directors of the financial institution are also the target of investigations.
