Speaking via videoconference at the Munich Security Conference, held in Germany, this Saturday (14), Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, stated that she believes that, once the democratic transition in Venezuela is consolidated, the regimes in Cuba and Nicaragua must also cease to exist.
“When we dismantle the criminal regime in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua will follow the same path. For the first time, the Americas will be able to free themselves from communism and dictatorship,” said María Corina.
She blamed the Chavista regime for the crisis in Venezuela and said that the legacy of Chavismo is the “brutal devastation” of the country.
“Not only did we lose institutions and resources, our families were also destroyed. A third of the population was forced to flee. Now we are experiencing the biggest migration crisis in the world”, he declared. “For years we have denounced and demonstrated to the world the level of crimes committed (by Chavistas) in Venezuela,” stated the opposition leader.
María Corina praised the US operation that captured dictator Nicolás Maduro and said that it was the “only country that risked the lives of some of its citizens for the freedom of Venezuela.”
“We are grateful because what happened on January 3 (the date of the operation that captured Maduro) opened the way for the democratic transition,” he said.
The opposition leader, however, said she hoped for more concrete actions for the complete liberation of Venezuela. Machado recalled that we cannot talk about a democratic transition in the country “if repression persists” and defended that the political, economic, humanitarian and security crises be faced simultaneously. She also highlighted the ongoing gradual release of political prisoners following US pressure.
