American forces took him to a prison in New York, where he has been held ever since. In his first hearing before the US Court, on January 5, he pleaded not guilty to the charges and claimed to be a “prisoner of war”. His wife, Cilia Flores, is also in prison and faces criminal charges. The former Venezuelan dictator faces charges of narcoterrorism, conspiracy to traffic cocaine, as well as conspiracy and possession of weapons and explosives. The US government accuses Maduro of heading a criminal organization called “Cartel de los Soles”. The White House placed the “Cartel de los Soles” in the crosshairs of its military apparatus by classifying drug trafficking organizations as terrorist organizations.
