Maduro pleads innocent at a hearing in New York and claims he is still the president. The deposed dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, asked this Thursday (26) that the United States Court dismiss the drug trafficking charge filed against him. Maduro claims that the American government is interfering in the process by preventing the Venezuelan government from paying legal fees. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp Maduro was arrested on January 3, during a United States operation in Venezuela. American forces took him to a prison in New York, where he has been held ever since. In his first hearing before the US Court, on January 5, he pleaded not guilty to the charges and claimed to be a “prisoner of war”. His wife, Cilia Flores, is also in prison and faces criminal charges. The former Venezuelan dictator faces charges of narcoterrorism, conspiracy to traffic cocaine, as well as conspiracy and possession of weapons and explosives. The US government accuses Maduro of heading a criminal organization called “Cartel de los Soles”. The White House placed the “Cartel de los Soles” in the crosshairs of its military apparatus by classifying drug trafficking organizations as terrorist organizations. The American government’s conclusions, however, are contested by researchers on the subject. For experts, the group does not function as a defined hierarchy, but as a “network of networks” that facilitates drug trafficking and profits from the activity. Still, there are indications that Maduro is one of the main beneficiaries of a “hybrid criminal governance” that he helped to install in the country. Maduro was scheduled to undergo a new hearing in US court on February 17. However, the procedure was postponed until March 26, after the Prosecutor’s Office alleged “planning and logistics problems”.
