President Lula said this Monday (9), in a joking tone, in São Paulo, that if his American counterpart, Donald Trump, knew what the “sanguinity” of the cangaceiro Lampião means, he would not provoke him. Lula was at the Butantan Institute, in the west of São Paulo, where he gave a combative speech.
“If he knew what Lampião’s bloodthirsty is in a president, he wouldn’t be provoking it,” said the president. At another point, Lula stated that he does not want to fight with Trump because “he could win”.

“There’s no point talking on television: ‘I have the biggest warship, I have the biggest submarine in the world, I have a plane, a ship a hundred times more important’. I don’t want to fight with him. Am I crazy? I’ll fight and I’ll win. What am I going to do?”, he asked.
Lula made reference to the “tariff” that the American government imposed on Brazilian products. Currently, Brazil faces export tariffs of 10%, after a reduction in additional duties of 40% — although some products have remained outside the exemption. The PT member has previously said that Trump is a “friend” and confirmed the American’s statement, who said there was “chemistry” between them and that he likes Lula.
End of Lulinha “peace and love”
The PT member recently abandoned his moderate rhetoric to adopt a more radical tone in his speeches. This weekend, he decreed the end of the “Lulinha peace and love” phase, a brand that accompanied him in his first mandates.
The mention of Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, known as Lampião, aims to associate his image with the poor population. Due to its northeastern origin, the cangaceiro is often linked, by sectors of the left, to the idea of fighting for social justice, defending minorities and challenging the powerful. However, for some historians, the cangaceiro was a criminal who plundered the income of poor and unarmed families, not the colonels, who had their own armed bands.
