Brazilian Lucas Pinheiro said goodbye to the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics this Monday (16). The gold medalist in the giant slalom event was one of the favorites to reach the podium in the slalom event, but fell on the first descent and was left out of the medal race.
Lucas was the sixth athlete to descend. He started with a better time than the then leader of the race, the Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath, and improved in the partial runs. However, on a curve halfway through the route, Lucas slipped and fell. The race involves two descents, which is why the Brazilian was eliminated with the fall. After the race, the athlete spoke about the difficulties he faced, as snow fell throughout the route.
Last Saturday (14), Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won the men’s alpine skiing final – giant slalom and won the gold medal, Brazil’s first at the Winter Olympic Games.
Until then, Brazil’s best performance at the Winter Olympics had come in the Turin edition, in 2006, when Isabel Clark won Final C of the women’s snowboard cross and came in ninth place. Until then, this had also been Latin America’s best result at a Winter Olympics.
