Left-wing activists organize flotilla bound for Cuba

by Marcelo Moreira

Left-wing activists announced this week that they will organize a flotilla to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba, along the lines of the one intercepted by Israel on its way to the Gaza Strip last year.

One of the organizers is David Adler, general coordinator of the NGO Progressive International, who was one of the leaders of the failed attempt to bring supplies to the Palestinian enclave.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, he said that on Sunday (15) the first meeting will be held to define the flotilla’s departure ports.

“The United States government is suffocating the Cuban people. They are without light, without food, without medicine, without energy. This is creating a humanitarian crisis,” said Adler, who compared the situation in Cuba to conditions in the Gaza Strip.

“I am not exaggerating when I say that we are seeing in Cuba the same strategy that Israel applied to the people of Gaza: a siege, an act of collective punishment that violates all aspects of international law,” said the leftist.

The Progressive International said in a statement that left-wing politicians, such as deputies María Fernanda Carrascal, from Colombia, and Rashida Tlaib, from the United States, support the initiative.

In October last year, claiming that there is a naval blockade in the region, Israel intercepted the boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which were heading to the Gaza Strip to deliver humanitarian aid.

The Israeli government said the initiative had only political objectives, as before the approach activists had rejected proposals to deliver supplies to Cyprus and the Israeli port of Ashdod.

The most famous name among the flotilla participants was the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who in June had already tried to dock with a boat with humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip along with other protesters, but was prevented by Israel.

Rumors on social media indicate that Thunberg would be invited to participate in the flotilla heading to Cuba, but for now there is no confirmation that she will join the initiative.

At the end of January, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced the application of tariffs on products imported from countries that send oil to Cuba, alleging that the Castro dictatorship serves as a basis for espionage and military actions by Russia, China and terrorist groups that threaten American national security.

Faced with this measure, Mexico, the largest oil exporter to Cuba in 2025, suspended shipments, worsening the socioeconomic crisis on the island caused by the Castro regime. This week, Russia, an ally of the Havana regime, said it will defy the Trump administration and send oil to Cuba soon.
