Navalny was the target of several investigations. He was sentenced in two cases to medium sentences, which he can serve on parole. In the first case, the European Court of Human Rights ruled, in 2016, that the process against alleged embezzlement at the state-owned timber company Kirovles was conducted in an arbitrary manner. However, judges in Strasbourg saw no political motivation in the case.
