A senior Israeli official told the agency Reuters that the body of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, was found after attacks launched by Israel and the United States against the Persian country. According to the source, the death occurred during the offensive that hit the complex where the ayatollah was stationed.
The information, however, is contested by Tehran. Iranian state media cited a source close to Khamenei’s office as saying the leader “is standing firm and commanding the field.” The Iranian government has not officially confirmed the death.
Questioned by NBC Newsthe President of the United States, Donald Trump, said he believes that the information about the death is “a correct story”. According to him, the operation aimed to eliminate a decades-old threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program and prevent the country from developing atomic weapons.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that there are “many signs” that Khamenei “is no longer alive” and stated that the leader’s compound had been destroyed. He also said that Revolutionary Guard commanders and authorities linked to the nuclear program were killed in the action.
Body was found in rubble, according to Israeli
According to the Israeli source interviewed by Reuters, the body of the supreme leader was found among the rubble of the affected complex. The location would have been a central target of the offensive, considered the most ambitious against Iran in decades.
To date, there is no independent confirmation regarding the formal identification of the body. The divergence between the versions of Israel and Iran maintains the scenario of uncertainty.
Iran called the attacks “unprovoked and illegal” and responded by firing missiles at Israel and at least seven other countries, including Gulf states that host American military bases. There are also reports of explosions in neighboring territories.
