Iran and the United States meet this Friday (6), in Oman, to discuss a possible agreement on the Iranian nuclear program and try to overcome differences between the two countries. However, a dispute over expanding the agenda threatens to hamper diplomatic progress and reignite tensions in the Middle East.
According to the White House, President Donald Trump defends a diplomatic solution to the impasse. The United States will be represented by Steve Witkoff, Trump’s main envoy for foreign affairs, and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law. The Iranian delegation will be led by the Foreign Minister. Oman will act as a mediator in the negotiations.
While Washington is pushing to broaden the scope of talks to include topics such as Iran’s ballistic missile program, Tehran has already made it clear that it wants to limit discussions exclusively to the nuclear issue, with meetings scheduled for the capital, Muscat.
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the United States also intends to address Iran’s support for armed groups in the region and issues related to the treatment of the Iranian population.
