The chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, announced this Monday (2) a change to an offensive military doctrine amid tensions with the US, warning that the “slightest mistake” will trigger a forceful and far-reaching response from Iran.
“After the 12-day war and the continuation of harmful American-Zionist actions, we have revised our defense doctrine, changing it to an offensive doctrine based on lightning and wide-range operations,” the military official said during an inspection of one of the Armed Forces units, according to the Iranian news agency. Mousavi stated that by adopting “disjointed and overwhelming” military strategies, our action will be swift, decisive and beyond US calculations.
“The slightest mistake will give us full freedom of action. The world will see a different face of strong Iran. Then, no American will be safe and the fire in the region will consume the US and its allies,” he warned.
Mousavi’s warnings come against a backdrop of rising tensions, after the US sent the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and three guided-missile destroyers, accompanied by thousands of additional troops, near Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf.
American President Donald Trump has threatened to launch an attack on Iran if he does not reach an agreement with the Persian country over its nuclear program.
Trump also said he would help protesters during the protests that shook the country between December 28 and January 11, if authorities cracked down on them.
According to the official report, in these mobilizations there were 3,117 deaths, while opposition NGOs such as HRANA, based in the USA, raise the figure to 6,842 deaths, investigate another 11 thousand possible homicides and report more than 40 thousand arrests.
Despite these threats, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei indicated today that Tehran is defining the details of a diplomatic process with the US and that it expects to make an announcement in the coming days.
In this sense, Iranian agencies Tasnim e Farsboth linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, reported that talks between Tehran and Washington will begin in the coming days, after the Iranian regime has given the green light.
“So far, the location and date of this meeting have not been decided, and it is likely that talks will take place between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff,” the Tasnim agency said, citing an anonymous source.
The US and Iran held negotiations for a nuclear agreement last year, but these were broken with the start of the war started by Israel against Iran in June, in which Washington participated with the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities.
