The French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, is expected to visit the territory in the coming weeks. “France reiterates its commitment to respecting the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” said the French Foreign Ministry in a statement released this Friday. French President Emmanuel Macron had announced plans for the consulate during his visit to Greenland last year, in a show of solidarity after Trump expressed interest in acquiring the territory. The French consul general in Greenland, Jean-Noël Poirier, previously served in Vietnam and Libya. He said the initial focus will be on listening to the needs of Greenlanders and prioritizing scientific and cultural initiatives. “I’m not afraid of the cold, the 8-hour nights. I was in Libya last year and we went through some dangerous moments. We were hit by mortar shells, but here I won’t need a bulletproof vest or helmet like in Tripoli, so there’s no problem,” he told reporters.
