Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered the Federal Police (PF) to investigate the possible illegal monitoring of members of the government of João Campos, mayor of Recife.
As rapporteur for the case at the Supreme Court, Mendes also ordered that an investigation conducted by the Public Ministry of Pernambuco be halted, while the case is investigated at the federal level.
The target of the espionage would have been the municipal secretary of Political and Social Articulation of Recife city hall, Gustavo Queiroz Monteiro, and his brother, Eduardo, who is an advisor to the city hall.
According to the accusation made by the municipal management, the two were monitored and followed by agents from the state’s Civil Police, and a tracker was even installed in one of the cars used by the secretary.
The alleged espionage would also have advanced in the digital environment, through data collection, including “tracking and facial recognition”.
