Germany has confirmed that it will participate in NATO’s Arctic Sentry mission by sending four Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to the Arctic.
The hearing was made by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in Brussels, according to the German media Der Spiegel.

According to sources in the Bundeswehr, the planes could be deployed as early as this week to start air control and patrol missions in the region. The German fighters will be stationed in Iceland, a strategic point in the North Atlantic. The main task of the force will be to carry out air police missions and maintain readiness for air combat.
Possible expansion of German presence
In addition to the four Eurofighter planes, Berlin is considering significantly strengthening its presence in the Arctic in the coming weeks.
Among the options being considered are:
- Deployment of maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft to monitor the sea areas;
- Availability of tanker aircraft to ensure long-range operations;
- Use of Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft for logistical support.

The use of the A400M will make it possible for Germany to support other participating countries that do not have their own strategic transport capacity, and thus facilitate the transport of material and equipment over long distances in a demanding operational environment.
Strategic context
Arctic Sentry– mission is part of NATO’s wider measures to strengthen deterrence and defense in the High North. The initiative takes place during a period of increased Russian military activity in the region and growing Chinese interest in the Arctic.
The Arctic has gained increasing geopolitical importance due to the gradual opening of new sea routes, the exploitation of natural resources and the area’s strategic importance for military and surveillance operations. For Germany, participation in the mission underlines the country’s commitment to NATO’s collective security and the stability of the alliance’s northern flank.
Germany will of course participate in Arctic Sentry. We also have a lot to offer: from maritime patrol aircraft P-8 Poseidon, A400M, submarines, frigates to Eurofighters.#WeAreNATO
