Ford Truck Recall: 4.4 Million Trucks Affected

Ford Motor Company is recalling over 4 million vehicles due to a software issue. Several models, including the automaker’s best-selling F-150 pickup, might have an integrated trailer module (ITM) that could lose communication capability with the vehicle. This could prevent a trailer’s brake lights and indicators from functioning.

The recall affects the 2022-2026 Ford F-250, the 2026 Ford E-Transit, the 2022-2026 Lincoln Navigator, the 2022-2026 Ford Expedition, the 2022-2026 Ford Maverick, the 2024-2026 Ford Ranger, and the 2021-2026 Ford F-150.

The Ford F-Series accounts for the bulk of the recall—3.4 million vehicles. Ford is recalling 412,105 Mavericks, 317,604 Expeditions, 129,836 Rangers, and 75,029 Navigators. The recall affects 4,380,609 models

According to the recall reporta software vulnerability “allows for a potential race condition” to occur between the ITM and CAN Standby Control bit. A race condition occurs when multiple processes access shared data at the same time, with the results depending on execution order, and it’s this unpredictable timing that can cause the failure.

If this occurs, owners will see a pop-up message indicating a “Trailer Brake Module Fault” or a “Blind Spot Assist System Fault.” Ford first learned of a potential issue last October but closed its investigation a few weeks later.

In December, Ford discussed the issue with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration during its monthly review, and the agency suggested it could constitute noncompliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

A month later, Ford reopened its investigation, discovered 405 warranty claims potentially related to this problem, and issued a recall. The automaker says it is unaware of any accidents, injuries, or fires related to this problem

Ford will fix the issue with an over-the-air update that it will deploy to affected vehicles in May. Owners may also take their vehicle to a Ford Motor Company service center for the update. The company will begin notifying affected owners starting in late March.

Motor1’s Take: Ford Motor Company has already issued 10 recalls so far this year, and this one is its biggest yet. It affects more than 3.0 million F-Series models dating back to 2021, but at least it is an easy fix with an OTA update. That’s far better than having to take your truck to a dealer and sit just for new software in the modern age.
