Taiwan authorities said this Tuesday (10) that China wants to annihilate the island through the imposition of the “one China” principle and the so-called “1992 consensus”, a strategy that, according to the Taiwanese government, would have the final consequence of eliminating its sovereignty.
According to the newspaper Taipei Timesthe Mainland Affairs Council stated that the rhetoric presented by Beijing during the so-called Working Conference on Taiwan represents the repetition of an old political line whose ultimate objective would be the total absorption of the island.
According to the Chinese state agency XinhuaWang Huning, chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and fourth-highest-ranking leader of the Chinese Communist Party, declared this week at the Taiwan Working Conference that authorities must advance the “great cause of national reunification”, support “patriotic pro-reunification” forces in Taiwan and combat what he called “separatism and external interference”.
According to XinhuaWang also reiterated the need to maintain the “one China” principle and the so-called “1992 consensus”, a political understanding according to which both sides of the Strait would recognize the existence of a single China, albeit with different interpretations.
In response, the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council declared, according to the Taipei Timesthat the Chinese Communist Party’s support for pro-reunification forces on the island and the proposal that “patriots” govern Taiwan demonstrate a strategy to deepen “internal divisions” in the country.
It added that it will continue to monitor Beijing’s actions and respond pragmatically to protect national sovereignty and security.
