The crime took place in 2014, during a luxury trip, and became known as the “Bali suitcase” case. The body of Sheila, 62, was found inside a suitcase in the trunk of a taxi parked at the St. Regis Bali Resort hotel in August 2014. She was a socialite from Chicago. Heather Mack, who was almost 19 and just a few weeks pregnant, and Schaefer, then 21, were arrested a day later. According to the prosecution, the young woman covered her mother’s mouth while the man attacked her with a bowl of fruit. Mack served seven years of a 10-year sentence in Bali for helping kill her mother and was deported in October 2021. In January 2024, she was sentenced to 26 years in prison in Chicago after pleading guilty to helping with the murder and hiding the body in the suitcase. Schaefer was deported to the United States this Tuesday after serving his sentence and receiving reductions for good behavior, according to local authorities.
