Troops from European countries begin to arrive in Greenland The White House stated this Thursday (15) that the sending of European troops to Greenland does not change the desire of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to acquire the territory. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands sent small military contingents to the island at the request of Denmark. According to European authorities, the soldiers will participate in military exercises and preparatory actions for a greater NATO presence in the region. Trump stated that Greenland should belong to the United States and did not rule out the use of force to seize the territory. The statements generated a reaction in Europe, being contested by Denmark and the island’s local government. This Thursday, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump still wants the island to be controlled by the United States. “I don’t think European troops influence the president’s decision-making process, nor the objective of acquiring Greenland,” he said. On Wednesday, officials from Denmark and Greenland met in Washington with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. After the meeting, a Danish representative said there remained a “fundamental disagreement” with Trump over the island’s future. The two sides agreed to create a working group to discuss US security concerns. Greenland’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, said she wants to strengthen cooperation with the US, but made it clear that the territory does not want to be controlled by Washington. The Russian government accused the military alliance of promoting an “accelerated military” mobilization, with what it called a clear objective of containing Russia and advancing an anti-Russian and anti-Chinese agenda. “The situation unfolding in high latitudes is a cause for serious concern for us,” said the Russian embassy in Belgium, where NATO is based. European authorities say that the military presence in the region has two objectives: to reinforce the island’s sovereignty and to respond to criticism from the United States about security in the Arctic. European Union countries warned that possible American military action against a NATO territory would put the future of the alliance at risk. VIDEOS: most watched on g1
