The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Friday (16), during a press conference, that he may impose tariffs on countries that do not support American plans for Greenland. According to him, the annexation of the island is essential to guarantee US strategic security in the Arctic.
This week, representatives from Denmark and Greenland were at the White House in meetings with the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and the Vice President of the United States, JD Vance. According to Danish officials, the talks were productive, but disagreements over Greenland’s future remain.
The US government spokeswoman confirmed the creation of a working group with representatives from the three countries to continue negotiations. The first meeting is scheduled for the next few weeks.
Trump first mentioned interest in buying Greenland from Denmark in 2019, during his first term. Re-elected in 2025, the president once again highlighted the strategic importance of the territory in the Arctic and did not rule out the use of force to annex it. Both the Danish government and the island’s population reject any change in sovereignty.
In recent weeks, the escalation of statements by the American president has increased tension with European countries. France announced the deployment of soldiers to Greenland and participation in military exercises organized by the Danish Armed Forces. Germany and Sweden also confirmed their involvement in the operation, considered symbolic, but seen as a political gesture of support for Danish sovereignty.
