Trump says TikTok is now in the hands of “patriots”

US President Donald Trump appeared this Friday (23) to be “very happy” for, as he said, having helped to “save” the social network TikTok, following the agreement reached between the Chinese parent company, ByteDance, and several American companies to which the platform was sold.

“I’m so happy to have helped save TikTok! It will now be owned by a group of great American patriots and investors, the largest in the world, and will be an important voice,” Trump wrote in a message on his own social network, Truth Social.

Under the terms of the deal negotiated by the Trump administration, the video-sharing app will be operated by a new American entity controlled by investors considered US allies. Among the new owners of the popular network are Oracle, MGX, Silver Lake and Michael Dell’s company, who will control more than 80% of the new company, ensuring the continuity of the application in the USA, according to the headquarters.

Since 2019, TikTok has faced blocking attempts by lawmakers, universities, the US Army and the White House, amid technological and commercial tension between the US and China. The application had been the target of ban threats and a temporary 14-hour blackout.

Trump stated that the social network, “among other factors, was responsible for my success with the youth vote in the 2024 presidential elections.”

The Republican also commented that he hopes that, “in the future, those who use and love TikTok remember me.” Furthermore, he thanked members of his government for their help in reaching the agreement.

“I would also like to thank President Xi (Jinping) of China for working with us and ultimately approving the agreement. He could have made the opposite decision, but he didn’t, and we thank him for his decision,” concluded the American president.

The short video social network promised on Friday that the new joint venture established in the US to avoid its ban in the country “will operate under defined safeguards that will protect national security.”

These mechanisms include “integral data protections, algorithm security, content moderation and software guarantees for users in the USA”, the company detailed in a statement.
