The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Tuesday (20) that he created the Peace Council because the UN has not helped him resolve conflicts around the world since the beginning of his second term, which is one year old today, and that the group can replace the United Nations.
“I wish we didn’t need a Peace Council,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “You know, with all the wars I’ve solved, the United Nations has never helped me with any of them.”
According to information from CNN, the American president said that the Peace Council “maybe” could replace the United Nations.
“The UN simply hasn’t been very useful. I’m a big fan of the UN’s potential, but it has never lived up to expectations,” he explained. “The UN should have resolved all the wars I resolved. I never turned to them, never even thought about turning to them.”
The American president, who claims to have brokered the end of eight conflicts in one year, has been inviting several international leaders since last week, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), to join the Peace Council.
The group will initially oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip after more than two years of war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, but Trump wants the council to act as an intermediary in other conflicts around the world.
Norway and France have already announced that they will not participate in the Peace Council, and Paris claimed that the main reason is precisely the fear that it will become an alternative to the UN.
In response earlier on Tuesday, the American president threatened to impose a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne due to this refusal.
Amid the dispute with European allies over their plans to annex Greenland, Trump said at the press conference that he did not trust that other NATO countries would help the United States if it suffered military aggression.
“I have done more for NATO than anyone else, living or dead,” said the American president.
“My biggest fear about NATO is that we spend enormous amounts of money on the organization, and I know we would come to their aid, but I really question whether they would come to our aid,” he said.
NATO’s Article 5, which provides that any aggression against an alliance country is considered aggression against the entire group, has been invoked only once in history, after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, when other NATO nations helped American forces in Afghanistan.
