The President of the United States, Donald Trump, would have removed Gregory Bovino from his position as general commander of the Border Patrol, after the death of a nurse by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during protests against an operation against illegal immigration in the state of Minnesota, according to information published by The Atlantic magazine website this Monday (26).

The publication reported that a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official and two other sources said that Bovino, who had been coordinating operations in Minneapolis, will return to his former post in the California city of El Centro, where he is expected to retire soon.

However, in a post on

On Saturday (24), nurse Alex Pretti, 37, was killed by Border Patrol agents led by Bovino, in an incident that is being investigated. On the 7th, fellow protester Renée Good was shot and killed by another ICE agent.

The Trump administration called Pretti and Good “domestic terrorists” and stated that in both cases the agents fired in self-defense, claiming that the nurse had a gun and the woman tried to run them over.

Defenders of the protesters stated that Pretti had a cell phone in his hands and did not pull out the gun he was carrying and that Good just tried to leave the place, and that there were abuses by the agents in the actions.

Earlier, American President Donald Trump had announced that his “border czar”, Tom Homan, will be sent to Minnesota.

After the president and members of his administration blamed the Democrats, who administer both the state and Minneapolis, for the violence due to protests in the region, Trump posted messages in a placating tone on Truth Social this Monday, after having spoken by phone with Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz.

“Just had a great phone conversation with Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis. Much progress is being made! Tom Homan will be meeting with him tomorrow to continue the discussion,” Trump wrote.

Regarding the conversation with Walz, the Republican said that he and the Democrat demonstrated that they were “in tune”.

“I told Governor Walz that I would ask Tom Homan to call him, and that we are looking for all the criminals they have in the state. The Governor respectfully understood that, and I will talk to him soon. He was happy that Tom Homan is going to Minnesota, and so am I!” Trump wrote.

At X, Frey said that “some federal agents will begin to leave the area tomorrow, and I will continue to press for the others involved in this operation to leave as well.”
