Trump argues that Greenland is “vital” to the Golden Dome

US President Donald Trump reiterated on Wednesday (14) that, with Greenland in his country’s “hands”, NATO will be much more effective, adding that “anything less is unacceptable”.

“NATO becomes much more formidable and effective with Greenland in U.S. hands. Anything less is unacceptable,” Trump said in a message on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The American leader once again defended his interest in the strategic island, currently under Danish sovereignty, on the same day that representatives from Denmark, Greenland and the USA meet to discuss Washington’s intentions to annex the territory.

The American capital will host the meeting, which will be attended by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, his Greenland counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt, American Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Vice President JD Vance.

“The US needs Greenland for its national security. It is vital to the Golden Dome that we are building”, defended the American president, referring to the ambitious anti-missile defense system he proposed to protect the country from space.

According to Trump, “NATO must lead the way to achieve this. If we don’t do it, Russia or China will, and that won’t happen!”, he emphasized.

“Militarily, without the vast power of the United States,” he specified, “much of which I built during my first term and which I am now taking to a new and even greater level, NATO would not be an effective or deterrent force — not by a long shot! They know this, and so do I.”

Denmark and Greenland, whose autonomy statutes recognize the island’s right to self-determination, have criticized US threats while expressing openness to greater cooperation with Washington.
