Trump announces 25% tariff on anyone doing business with Iran

by Marcelo Moreira

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Monday (12) that he will impose a 25% tariff on any country that does business with Iran, a member of the BRICS along with Brazil.

“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a 25% tariff on any and all commercial transactions conducted with the United States of America. This order is final and non-appealable,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social network.

Large protests against Iran’s theocratic regime, amplified by the economic crisis in the Persian country, have been taking place since the last week of December. The ayatollahs’ regime has responded violently: more than 500 people have been killed and more than 10,000 arrested since the demonstrations began.

Trump has reaffirmed that he can carry out military actions in Iran in response to this repression and on Sunday night (11) he told journalists on Air Force One, the official plane of the American presidency, that he is looking at the issue “very seriously”.

“The military is analyzing the situation and we are considering some very strong options. We will make a decision,” said the American president.
