Trump in Davos Evan Vucci/AP United States President Donald Trump is “actively seeking” regime change in Cuba, according to the Wall Street Journal. In a report published this Wednesday (21), the outlet states that the Republican administration is looking for influential people in Havana to close an agreement to overthrow the communist regime by the end of the year. According to the newspaper, the US government assessed that the Cuban economy was on the verge of collapse and stated that the regime had never been so vulnerable. This is since it lost a fundamental strategic ally, such as Venezuelan Nicolás Maduro. Although there is no concrete plan to overthrow the communist government that has been present on the island for almost 70 years, American officials see Maduro’s capture and the concessions made by his allies as an example and, at the same time, a warning for Havana. “I strongly suggest they make a deal. BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE,” President Trump declared in a social media post on January 11. In the same text, the Republican stated that “NO OIL OR MONEY” would be sent to Cuba. On January 3, the US army carried out a large-scale attack against Venezuela and captured President Nicolás Maduro. At the time, Havana reported that 32 of its citizens died in the offensive. “The United States of America successfully carried out a large-scale attack against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolás Maduro, who was captured, along with his wife, and removed from the country by air,” Trump said on the date.
