Deaths were recorded in several states. In Massachusetts and Ohio, two people were killed by snow plows. Teenagers have died in sledding accidents in Arkansas and Texas. In Kansas, a woman was found dead in the snow after leaving a bar. In New York, eight people were found dead outdoors. The storm also caused blackouts. On Monday night (26), more than 560,000 properties were without electricity in the USA, according to the PowerOutage website. Most of the outages occurred in the South, where freezing rain toppled trees and utility poles. The bad weather also caused the cancellation and delay of thousands of flights. On Monday alone, more than 12,000 flights were affected, according to FlightAware. Schools were also closed in several cities, including New York, where around 500,000 students took classes online. Meteorologists say that about two-thirds of the United States is facing extreme temperatures and warn of the possibility of a new storm hitting the East Coast next weekend.
