by Marcelo Moreira

Socialist candidate António José Seguro is leading voting intention polls for the second round of Portugal’s presidential elections, according to recent surveys released by the Portuguese press and research aggregators.

According to a research aggregator carried out by newspaper Observerwhich consolidates data from all published polls with the two candidates, Seguro appears with 70.17% of voting intentions, against 29.83% for his opponent André Ventura, leader of the right-wing Chega party. The model is updated whenever a new electoral survey is released and crosses the most recent numbers with the complete survey history.

According to the publication, the trend observed in recent days indicates stability in the socialist candidate’s advantage.

Individual research data that feeds the aggregator of Observer reinforce this scenario. According to a survey carried out by the Pitagorica institute for TVI/CNN, released this Monday (26), Seguro records 69.7% of voting intentions, while Ventura accounts for 30.3%. The Cesop/Católica survey for the vehicles RTP, Público and Antena 1 points to 70% for the socialist and 30% for the leader of Chega.

At the same time, the News Journal of Portugal published a survey indicating that Seguro started the second round with 60.9% of direct voting intentions, compared to 26.5% for Ventura, an advantage of 34 percentage points. According to the News Journalthe research also points to a high rejection rate for Chega’s candidate, a factor that, according to the vehicle, could limit his growth margin in the final stretch of the campaign.

This Monday, Ventura released an online poll on social media in which he appears ahead of the socialist candidate. The virtual vote released by Chega’s leader shows 63.16% for him and 36.84% for Seguro.

The second round of presidential elections in Portugal is scheduled to take place on February 8th.
