The president added that Jesus “died surrounded by women who loved him.” Petro declares himself Catholic, although he says he is not a practitioner. According to Christian doctrine, Jesus Christ led a life of celibacy and did not have sexual relations or sentimental ties. In a statement, the Evangelical Confederation of Colombia stated that the president’s statements “distort the historical, biblical and theological truth” and “constitute a lack of respect” for Jesus Christ. The Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Church also reacted. In a statement, he called for “respect, non-interference and protection of people in their beliefs”. “No employee or other person is called upon to issue theological concepts”, added the entity.
