The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing to name Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
McCarthy, who spent the past five seasons in charge of the Dallas Cowboys, became available after negotiations on a contract extension stalled following the 2024 season. Dallas ultimately chose a different path, promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and closing the door on McCarthy’s tenure.
He is expected to succeed Mike Tomlin, who stepped away from the role earlier this month after 19 seasons at the helm in Pittsburgh – a run defined by sustained competitiveness and organizational stability.
McCarthy arrives with a championship résumé the Steelers have been seeking to replicate since their most recent Super Bowl title at the conclusion of the 2008 season. He led the Green Bay Packers to a Lombardi Trophy during the 2010 campaign and has logged more than a decade of head-coaching experience across two high-profile franchises.
The move also carries an intriguing quarterback subplot. McCarthy’s lone Super Bowl came with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback in Green Bay, and Rodgers spent last season in Pittsburgh. Rodgers’ future with the Steelers remains uncertain, but the hire inevitably invites speculation about how the position will be handled moving forward.
