The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will release this Thursday (22) the complete list of nominees for the 2026 Oscar. The 98th edition should take place on March 15.
The Brazilian film “The Secret Agent” has a chance of receiving six nominations: best film, best direction and best actor for Wagner Moura’s performance, as well as best non-English language film, best original screenplay and best casting direction – a new category at the awards.
Specialized critics are strongly betting on the categories of best non-English language film and best actor. For the first time in history, a Brazilian production has a real chance of winning all six nominations. If it happens, “The Secret Agent” will break the previous record held by “City of God”, which achieved four nominations in 2004.
“The Secret Agent”, by director Kleber Mendonça Filho, made history at this year’s Golden Globe Awards by being the first film to win two awards in the same edition. The feature film won the categories for best film in a non-English language and best actor in a drama film, for Wagner Moura’s performance, losing only the best drama film category to “Hamnet: Life before Hamlet”.
Set in the 1970s, the film tells the story of a university professor, who lived in São Paulo and decides to return to Recife and meet his youngest son, despite the risk he runs during the military dictatorship.
