North Korea carried out on January 27 a test of a modernized large-caliber multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) as part of its efforts to expand strategic military capabilities.

The test was personally observed by Kim Jong Un Jong Un and his daughter, according to the state news agency KCNA.

According to the official statement, four rockets were launched during the test and accurately struck maritime targets located at a distance of 358.5 kilometers from the firing point.

North Korean authorities claim the system incorporates new technologies aimed at increasing mobility, accuracy, and the ability to operate even under attempts at external interference.

During the observation of the test, Kim Jong Un stated that the launch represents a significant advance for the country’s strategic deterrence, emphasizing that the development of defense technologies is considered essential for national self-defense.

The North Korean leader also said that, in the coming years, other countries would not be able to reach the current technological level attributed to the tested system.

According to KCNA, the test was also attended by Kim from Sikfirst deputy head of a department of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, and Jang Chang Ha, head of the General Directorate of Rocket Construction.

Kim Jong Un Jong Un added that the next steps to strengthen the country’s strategic capabilities, including nuclear deterrence, will be discussed at the Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea, which is expected to define future guidelines for the state’s defense policy.

The test comes amid constant monitoring of North Korean launches by countries in the region, such as South Korea and Japan, and keeps international attention focused on Pyongyang’s military program.
