Venezuela’s opposition leader, María Corina Machado, met this Thursday (15) with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. The press did not have access to the meeting, but after the meeting, the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize made brief comments to journalists outside the White House, where the two politicians had lunch.
“Know that we count on President Trump for Venezuela’s freedom,” he declared. The American president has not yet commented on the meeting, but in a press conference at the same time as the meeting, the White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said that the Republican expected “a good and positive discussion with Mrs. Machado”.
After the meeting with Trump, María Corina met with American senators at the Capitol, the seat of the United States Legislature.
“I ask you to reflect on everything we have been through: 26 years [de chavismo]35 elections, millions of people on the streets. Some were murdered. Teenagers and children. Women sexually assaulted simply for defending their vote. Seventeen attempts at dialogue, all failed,” said the opposition leader, according to excerpts of the conversation released by her party, Vente Venezuela.
“When Venezuela is free, millions of Venezuelans will return of their own free will. There is hope for the future,” he added.
After dictator Nicolás Maduro was captured in an American military operation on the 3rd, Trump claimed that it would be “very difficult” for María Corina to “be the leader” of Venezuela, since, according to him, the opposition “does not have the support or respect [necessários] within the country.”
He has been negotiating with interim dictator Delcy Rodríguez, called a “fantastic person” by the American president on Wednesday (14).
