Lula wants to hear from other leaders about the invitation to participate in Trump’s “Peace Council”

by Marcelo Moreira

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) met yesterday (19) with Chancellor Mauro Vieira to decide whether Brazil will accept North American President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the “Peace Council” for the Gaza Strip.

The Brazilian government, in principle, is not opposed to participating in an international forum aimed at reconstructing the territory of Gaza, but assesses that there are sensitive points that need to be clarified before a decision is made. The main one is the possibility of discussing the future of the region without the participation of Palestinian representatives. For the government, this is considered unacceptable.

Brazilian diplomats also claim that Trump’s proposal is to create a council that functions as a counterpoint to the UN (United Nations), further emptying its role. According to the draft bylaws, permanent members would have to contribute one billion dollars in the first year. Lula still wants to hear from other presidents.

In addition to Brazil, around 60 invitations were sent to countries on all continents.
