The Japanese Ministry of Defense reported a marked increase in the number of emergency interceptions performed by the Air Self-Defense Force in December 2025.
According to data released by the Joint Office of the General Staff on January 16, 2026, in December alone, 79 alert launches were recorded to intercept foreign military aircraft approaching Japanese airspace.
By comparison, only 33 intercept launches were recorded in November, an increase of 46 launches in just one month. These data reflect continuous airspace monitoring operations conducted throughout the country.

According to the Joint Office of the General Staff, Chinese military aircraft were responsible for 53 interceptions in December, while Russian aircraft were responsible for 23.
The next three launches were classified by the Japanese ministry as “other” – a designation used in situations where the origin of the aircraft cannot be immediately confirmed. There were no launches reported during the month in response to aircraft from North Korea or Taiwan.

December’s data raised the total number of launches for the 2025 calendar year to 448, continuing a year-round trend of increased aviation activity near Japan.
The figures also show that activity peaked twice in the last quarter – 71 starts in October and 79 in December – after a brief decline in November.
Most of December’s launches took place in Japan’s southwestern airspace, where 54 launches were recorded, according to a detailed ministry tally. The northern airspace was responsible for six launches, the western airspace for 11 and the central airspace for eight.
