Iran has announced it will integrate 1,000 new drones into its arsenal, a move linked to rising tensions and US President Donald Trump’s bellicose rhetoric.
According to Tehran’s state news agencies, the drones were developed by army experts together with the Ministry of Defense to face “new threats” and take advantage of the experience gained in last year’s 12-day war with Israel.
The drones for land and sea use have offensive, tactical and strategic capabilities, capable of attacking moving and stationary targets on land, air and sea, although images of the drones have not been released for security reasons.
The commander of Iran’s army, Amir Hatami, emphasized that strengthening the military force is aimed at preserving and expanding the country’s strategic advantage, enabling quick and “decisive” responses to any external aggression. Hatami said the measure is in line with Tehran’s perceived future threats, and the expansion of drone capacity is part of its permanent defense strategy.
The announcement of the integration of the drones comes amid escalating verbal clashes between Tehran and Washington. Trump raised the tone of Iran’s opposition, saying that a fleet of US warships – which he referred to as a “huge fleet” – was heading to the Middle East and that “the time has passed” for Iran to accept a fair deal, while not talking about using nuclear weapons. The president emphasized that the United States is ready to respond quickly and forcefully if necessary.
In response to the US statements, the Iranian authorities have repeatedly stated that they are willing to engage in dialogue only on respectful and balanced terms, but have confirmed that they will defend themselves firmly against any pressure or attack. Tensions between the two countries remain high, and mutual threats and military movements increase the risk of conflict in the region.
