Explosion in restaurant leaves dead and more than 10 injured in Afghanistan

An explosion in a restaurant in the center of Kabul, Afghanistan, left at least seven dead and more than a dozen injured this Monday (19). The information was confirmed by the Italian NGO Emergency, which runs a surgical center in the Afghan capital, and by local authorities.

According to the organization, 20 people were treated after the explosion that occurred in the Shahr-e-Naw neighborhood, close to a hospital.

“Among the people who were treated, there were seven people who arrived dead,” the organization said in a statement, highlighting that the number of victims is still provisional.

The explosion happened in a Chinese restaurant. According to Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran, the establishment was jointly owned by an Afghan citizen, a Chinese citizen and his wife, and was frequented by Chinese Muslims. According to him, one Chinese citizen and six Afghans died at the scene. The explosion reportedly occurred near the restaurant’s kitchen, and the cause remains under investigation.

Among the injured were four women and a child, according to the director of Emergency in Afghanistan, Dejan Panic. He said the patients had lacerations and bruises, and that some were being evaluated for surgical procedures.
