This Sunday (25), American climber Alex Honnold made a one and a half hour climb of the Taipei 101 skyscraper, in Taiwan. Without ropes and under the eyes of thousands of fans who cheered and waved as he climbed one of the tallest buildings in the world, he reached the top in an hour and a half. The journey to the top was broadcast live.
The building is 508 meters tall and is an important tourist attraction in Taiwan. It was considered the tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2010, a title currently held by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The climb, without any safety equipment, took place with the support and permission of the building and the city government. Upon reaching the top of the tower, Honnold was greeted with applause from a crowd below, on the street. Wearing a short-sleeved red t-shirt, he celebrated by waving his arms above his head.
Honnold became world famous in 2017 when he climbed a complete route on El Capitan in Yosemit National Park. The feat was worthy of a documentary, released in 2019 and winning an Oscar.
