Venezuela mobilizes army to “protect” oil sector

by Marcelo Moreira

The regime of dictator Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela decided to mobilize military forces to reinforce the security of strategic installations in the energy sector, amid increased tension with the United States in the Caribbean Sea.

The Chavista dictatorship placed military units to monitor several oil complexes, including the Ana María Campos Petrochemical Complex, in the state of Zulia, on the border with Colombia, and the Paraguaná Refining Center, in the state of Falcón. The measure comes amid strong military pressure that the Maduro regime has been suffering from the US.

According to a video released this Tuesday (30) by the operational strategic commander of the FANB, Domingo Hernández Lárez, the head of the Strategic Integral Defense Region (Redi) 1 West, Pedro González Ovalles, stated that a Rapid Reaction Unit (URRA) remains mobilized to “guarantee the integral security” of the two energy installations.

According to the Venezuelan Ministry of Hydrocarbons, the Paraguaná Refining Center is one of the largest refining complexes in the world and is responsible for transforming crude oil into derivatives such as gasoline, diesel and asphalt, and is considered vital for the country’s internal supply.

The Ana María Campos Petrochemical Complex, according to information from Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), brings together fertilizer, plastic and other industrial input factories and is classified by the government as strategic for the use of Venezuelan natural gas.

In recent weeks, the US has begun targeting Venezuela’s oil sector, a source of financing for the Chavista regime. This month, US authorities seized two ships carrying Venezuelan oil, and US President Donald Trump announced a complete blockade of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. The US has also confirmed that it carried out an attack against a port area inside Venezuela.
