Two camps linked to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in the Bauni forest (northwest) were hit in United States airstrikes in Nigeria, according to the African country’s government this Saturday (27).
The Ministry of Information said in a statement that the affected locations were used as concentration and preparation bases by foreign IS elements infiltrating Nigeria from the Sahel region, in collaboration with local affiliates, to plan and execute large-scale terrorist attacks on Nigerian territory.
The African country once again emphasized that the airstrikes authorized by President Donald Trump received “explicit support” from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Pentagon said the operation involved launching about ten Tomahawk missiles from a US Navy ship into the Gulf of Guinea, hitting “multiple” targets in Sokoto, near the border with Niger.
Trump defended the attack, which he described as “powerful and deadly”, to contain the massacre of Christians in one of the most dangerous places in the world to profess faith.
