The UK is taking steps to speed up the process of modernizing the Challenger 3 tank, working with industry to secure essential materials and reduce bottlenecks in the supply chain.
The initiative was highlighted after questions from Labor Party MP Luke Akehurst, who asked for clarification on production times, delivery of armored vehicles and measures to shorten the entire military acquisition cycle.
According to Defense Minister Luke Pollard, the government is committed to developing Challenger 3 on schedule, prioritizing the safety of critical materials and reducing risks that could delay deliveries to the armed forces. He also pointed out that the current Defense Industrial Strategy projects an average of six years for the acquisition of large military platforms, which makes it difficult to make direct comparisons with other NATO countries due to differences in acquisition systems.
Pollard said the new segmented purchasing model, combined with accelerated commercial processes, should significantly reduce time and speed up contract signing.
The Ministry of Defense is working to meet the 1 April 2026 target for full implementation of the new approach, as set out in the Strategic Defense Review.
