A small ultralight plane crashed into the sea of Copacabana, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, in the early afternoon of this Saturday (27). The fall occurred at post 3 on the waterfront, close to the Copacabana Palace hotel and the area where the main stage for New Year’s Eve is set up.
According to the Fire Department, teams are working on site with all available resources, including jet skis, inflatable boats, a diving team and air support. The searches are ongoing and, so far, there is no confirmation on the number of victims.
Saturday saw strong sunshine in Rio de Janeiro, which attracted a large number of people to the beach. On busy waterfront days, it is common for ultralight aircraft to circulate in the region, generally used to advertise advertising banners on Rio’s waterfront.
The circumstances surrounding the crash of the ultralight are still to be investigated by the competent authorities.
