More than 900 police officers from the Peruvian National Police (PNP) participated in a major security and control operation in the early hours of this Sunday (28) in the Independência neighborhood, in the north of Lima, where Peruvians and foreigners without documents were detained, according to official sources.
The operation, which had the support of members of the Army and municipal security, was supervised by the interim president of Peru, José Jerí, and several of his ministers, including the Minister of the Interior, José Tiburcio.
“Led by President José Jerí, we mobilized our forces in a major operation in the Independência neighborhood, with the participation of more than 900 police officers from the Peruvian National Police. The State is on the streets,” said Tiburcio in a message published on social media.
His office stated that the operation was “differentiated and targeted, with territorial control, complete identification of suspects and results from the beginning”, with the intention of “redoubling efforts to restore order and public security”.
In turn, the Peruvian Presidency indicated that Jerí witnessed the deployment of agents and reaffirmed that the fight against criminal organizations and common crime “is not lost”.
“The small battles we are fighting will allow us to achieve this objective, and this must be the commitment of us, the authorities and the security forces, to restore peace among citizens”, he emphasized.
The Ministry of the Interior detailed that the agents were divided into several groups to take control of specific areas and carry out identity checks in hostels, bars, nightclubs and other nightlife establishments in Independência.
“Peruvian citizens and undocumented foreigners were detained and taken to the local police station for legal proceedings,” the Ministry said, without specifying the number of detainees.
Also participating in the operation were the Minister of the Environment, Miguel Angel Espichán; the Vice Minister of Public Security, José Zapata; the Vice Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources, Romina Caminada; and the General Commander of the National Police, Óscar Arriola.
This Saturday (27), Jerí stated that his government, scheduled to end in July next year, will win the “total” fight he launched against crime and will “reestablish peace” in the country.
The president announced that new measures will be taken to strengthen citizen security, with the aim of continuing “working in this direction, with a firm hand, to guarantee a peaceful 2026, where police work is carried out in better conditions.”
