North Korea has released images of the hull of its nuclear submarine under construction in a move that has been interpreted as a threat to South Korea, which plans to build nuclear submarines with US support.
Dictator Kim Jong-un had ordered the construction of nuclear submarines in 2021 and until then few images of parts of the boat had been released. Pyongyang has not set a date for completing the project, but military analysts say the image shows that the regime has possibly already managed to build a nuclear reactor on the submarine, the most critical phase of the project.
The submarine must be powered by nuclear energy, but unlike the Brazilian project, it must be capable of carrying ballistic missiles and possibly nuclear weapons.
This week, an American nuclear submarine, the Los Angeles-class USS Greeneville, docked at a port in South Korea. This was considered an escalation of threats by Kim Jong-un’s regime.
