Milei celebrates approval of Argentina’s budget for 2026

by Marcelo Moreira

The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, celebrated this Saturday (27) the parliamentary approval of the Budget Law for 2026, which includes a primary surplus target equivalent to 1.5% of GDP.

On social media, the libertarian classified the approval of the budget as a “historic event”.

The Budget Law for 2026, which had already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies on December 18, was approved on Friday night (26) by the Senate with the support of sectors of the opposition in dialogue with the government.

The approved budget projects a significant slowdown in inflation to 10.1% per year until 2026 – well below the 117.8% recorded in 2024 and lower than the 27.9% accumulated until November 2025 – and an exchange rate of 1,423 pesos per dollar in December 2026, lower than the current value.

The budget also projects GDP growth of 5% for next year and a primary fiscal surplus for the national public sector equivalent to 1.5% of GDP, with an increase of 20.6% in public spending and 20.8% in revenue.

“In 2025, we break the inertia of Argentina’s decadence. In 2026, the reconstruction of Argentina begins”, stated Milei.

The president also celebrated the approval of the Fiscal Innocence Law around midnight on Friday, which, according to him, “corrects the fraud that the State perpetrated against Argentines for 40 years, restoring the freedom to use their savings and protecting them from future politicians.”

The new law establishes that all taxpayers are, in principle, considered to be up to date with their tax obligations, unless the tax authorities demonstrate, with concrete evidence, that there has been deliberate tax evasion.

The law also facilitates the payment of tax debts, reduces fines and creates a simplified system for declaring income tax, among other provisions.

The legislation aims to encourage the use of dollar savings that Argentines have not declared due to high tax burdens or fear of confiscation.

“This law is revolutionary. We are protecting the savings of Argentines forever. No government that comes after us will be able to steal the savings of good Argentines,” said Milei.

In a statement released this Saturday, the Argentine Presidency emphasized that the new law allows “all Argentines who respect the law to make full and free use of the fruits of their labor, generating greater dynamism in the economy and contributing to the country’s sustained growth.”
