Around 60 opponents of President Nicolás Maduro were released in Venezuela after being detained in the context of the 2024 elections.
The arrests took place during the political crisis that followed Maduro’s re-election for a third term. The electoral process was marked by allegations of fraud, which the Venezuelan government denies.
Before the releases announced this Christmas period, non-governmental organizations in the country estimated that around 1,085 people were imprisoned for political reasons.
So far, authorities have not clarified under what conditions the releases were carried out or whether other releases are planned.
