The full list includes more than 1,157 people from politics, sport, the arts or community service who will be awarded membership, commander or officer of the Order of the British Empire up to the highest honors of knight and dame. Elba, known for his roles in the television series “Luther” and “The Listener”, was awarded a knighthood for his campaign against knife crime among young people. Idris Elba talks about the film in which he plays Nelson Mandela Torvill and Dean, whose 1984 Olympic bolero choreography achieved perfect scores and became a defining moment in British sport, were honored – she as a lady and he as a knight. “This year’s honors list celebrates the best of the UK — people who put the common good before themselves to strengthen communities and change lives,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement. Oscar-nominated and Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo, best known for her starring role as Elphaba Thropp in the 2024 musical film “Wicked,” has received the Order of the British Empire. Warwick Davis, who starred in the “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter” and “Willow” franchises and founded the dwarfism charity Little People UK, also received this honor. The New Year honours, which have been awarded since at least 1890, are intended to recognize not just well-known figures but people who have contributed to national life through often unknown work over many years.
