For the second day in a row, SP breaks heat record

by Marcelo Moreira

This Friday (26), temperatures in the city of São Paulo reached 36.2 degrees. According to Civil Defense, the city of São Paulo has set a new record for heat in December.

At Mirante de Santana, thermometers reached 36.2 °C around three in the afternoon. This value not only surpassed the 35.9 °C recorded on Thursday, the Christmas holiday, but also became the highest temperature ever observed in December since 1961.

Given the scenario, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a red alert for extreme heat this Friday. The warning is valid until Monday and covers several regions of the country, including the entire state of São Paulo.

The city of São Paulo remains in a state of alert for high temperatures, as decreed by the Municipal Civil Defense last Monday (22). The Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) reported that this Friday afternoon will continue with a predominance of sun and a gradual increase in clouds. The arrival of sea breezes already favors the formation of isolated areas of rain, mainly to the north of Greater São Paulo.

The State Civil Defense also issued an alert for a heat wave valid until 6pm this Friday. According to the agency, high temperatures pose a risk to the health of the population. An atmospheric blockage is affecting part of the country, making it difficult for meteorological systems to arrive and keeping the heat persistent in the Southeast, with temperatures at least five degrees above average and very muggy dawns.

For the next few days, the hot and humid air mass continues to predominate, but the tendency is for the weather to change with the approach of a cold front between the 29th and 31st of December. This system should increase the frequency and volume of rain in São Paulo, as well as areas of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.
